Lywand Relies on European Infrastructure: Moving From AWS to next layer

We have moved our infrastructure from AWS to next layer, taking a clear step toward digital sovereignty. This change strengthens data protection, transparency, and control over sensitive data within Europe.

A Strategic Step Toward Greater Digital Sovereignty

We have moved from AWS to next layer, deliberately choosing a European hosting partner. For us, this step is part of a clear strategic direction: greater digital sovereignty, more control over our infrastructure, and data processing that takes place entirely within Europe.

As an Austrian – and therefore European – company, it is important to us that all data processing takes place exclusively in European data centers and is subject to the European legal framework. Especially at a time when data protection, regulatory requirements, and transparency are becoming increasingly important, this move provides us with a clear and stable foundation for the long term.

Perfect kick-off for our move to next layer: Bernhard Schildendorfer, CTO & Co-Founder of lywand, together with David Lienbacher and Maximilian Henzl, attended the opening ceremony of the new next layer data center in Vienna as the main people responsible for the migration.

European Infrastructure With Technical Proximity

With next layer, we have found a hosting partner that meets our requirements for data protection, transparency, and technical proximity. Next layer is an Austrian internet service provider based in Vienna and operates certified data center locations in Vienna.

For lywand, this means clearly defined European legal frameworks, short decision-making paths, personal technical support, and direct points of contact. This makes the collaboration more partnership-driven and transparent – an advantage that has both operational and strategic impact.

More Control, Transparency, and Predictability

The move is based on a combination of strategic, technical, and economic considerations. At its core was the conscious decision to choose a European infrastructure partner and, with it, greater digital independence.

From a technical perspective, we benefit from a high degree of flexibility, greater transparency in infrastructure and operational processes, and better control over the resources used. At the same time, the new environment allows us to plan our infrastructure more precisely and align technical performance more closely with actual demand.

The move also makes sense economically: we gain greater cost control and avoid unnecessary complexity or scaling costs that are difficult to calculate.

A Clear Commitment for European Digital Infrastructure

The move to next layer is also a clear commitment for greater technological independence and reduced reliance on global hyperscalers outside Europe.

As an Austrian company, we see this as an important step toward strengthening European digital infrastructure and keeping sensitive data within Europe. This ensures clear European data protection and compliance rules, creating additional security for us as well as for our partners and customers.
